This is the type of Bequest that is highly recommended by the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. A residual Bequest is simply a gift of whatever is left of your Estate – or a percentage thereof – after all your other gifts, taxes and debts have been fulfilled.
This type of Bequest maintains its relative value and automatically adjusts as the value of your Estate increases. What’s so important about a residual Bequest is that it allows you to decide exactly how much you want to leave to your loved ones, whilst leaving whatever may be left over to the Foundation. It is worth noting that a Residual Bequest may be worth more to the Foundation than a Pecuniary Bequest.
For example, $30,000 – a large sum today, will not have the same value in 20 years time. By dividing your Estate by percentages you can be confident that the gift received will retain its value as your Bequest matures.
This means that the Foundation can conduct even more research into the cause, treatment, prevention and cure of childhood illness.
This refers to simply leaving a gift of a set dollar amount determined by you at the time of drawing up or altering your Will.
A specific Bequest refers to leaving an item of value to be passed on to the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation in order to generate funds. A specific Bequest is a good way to provide additional support for the Foundation on top of a Residual Bequest, as they provide a way to turn any items not wanted by your loved ones into desperately needed funds to work wonders for sick kids.
Our recommended wording for your Bequest – whether it be for a specific or residual gift is:
“I give and bequeath (choose one of the following) the residue of my estate both real and personal OR the sum of $........(or property or shares) to the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation, Queensland, to be applied for their general charitable purposes and in respect of such Bequest, I declare as follows:
A general charitable intent shall apply B. The receipt of their Chief Executive Officer, Treasurer or other proper officer shall be sufficient discharge to my executors and trustees C. My executors and trustees shall not be obliged to see nor enquire into the application of money or assets, the subject of such legacy.”
Advising us that you have included the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation in your Will gives us the opportunity to thank you now for your future gift. As the Guardians of the future of our sick kids we will inscribe your name in our honour book, which is displayed in the Foundation building.
We will also regularly update you with news of our little patients and the work and achievements of our researchers and the Foundation.

Iris Fogg always felt that if she could help people less fortunate than herself then she should.
“Children are our future after all and I feel that if we can help it is up to us to make sure that our sick kids have the very best opportunity to have good health and be doing things that kids should be doing. Even though I was never lucky enough to have children I always had a great deal of love and support to offer the little ones. “
Iris was a very generous person who had supported Queensland’s sick kids, well before the establishment of the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation in 1986.
The Royal Children’s Foundation had a very close relationship with Iris and, in 2002, she informed us that she had decided to continue helping sick kids by leaving a lasting legacy. She had decided to include a gift in her Will to the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation.
“I wanted to make sure that I could go on helping even when I pass from this world”
The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation continued to stay in close contact with Iris, providing her with regular updates on the ground breaking research being conducted no less than 10 km from her home of over 60 years.
Just after Christmas, 2008, at age 100, Iris passed away peacefully. Having kept her promise, the solicitors handling her estate sent us her Bequest - a cheque in the amount of $150,000.
This money was used to help work wonders for our kids, investing in ground breaking research into illnesses like cystic fibrosis.
The RCHF is so grateful to Iris for thinking of us in this way, and whilst she regularly donated what ever she could afford, she knew that she could provide a more generous gift to help in our work, by leaving a gift in her Will.
You too can leave a legacy to the sick kids of Queensland by including the RCHF in your Will.

As responsible parents, Mark and Alison decided to make a Will to provide for their children in case of their death. Within the Will, they made a Bequest to the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation after Ryan underwent lifesaving treatment at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Ryan was born in August 2000 with a congenital saccular cyst above his left vocal cord, a condition that severely affected his breathing. Since then he has undergone several operations, MRI scans, five admissions to the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, and many trips to specialists to monitor his progress.
Ryan is now a healthy nine-year-old and the only evidence of his earlier medical problems is that he can’t quite match the volume of his little sisters Sophie and Phoebe in the playground. Mark and Alison were understandably shaken by the experience, but remain eternally grateful for the expert treatment Ryan received at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Alison feels very strongly that leaving a Bequest is the right thing to do. “I feel it’s important to be able to contribute in some way. We were confronted with the greatest of all fears, but the expert treatment Ryan received and the support services offered by the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation helped us through this terrible time. So when writing our Will we said – let’s take care of our kids and all those who helped us when we needed it”.
You can help work wonders for sick and injured kids by remembering the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation in your will.
