In December 1999, Chris and Louise Bazley’s son, Jim Bazley was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and admitted to Banskia Ward at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
From the very beginning, Jim was surrounded by a loving network of family, friends and community supporters who began raising funds to help him and the other young patients in Banksia Ward.
Unfortunately, Jim lost his long battle with neuroblastoma in 2001. But in loving memory of this remarkable young man, his family, friends and many other caring individuals continue to fight for a cure by raising funds for the Friends of Jimmy Bazley Neuroblastoma Research Fund.
Since 2000, more than $170,000 has been raised through the support of generous individuals, community groups and businesses to fund vital Oncology Research, so that other children may have a better chance of recovery.
The Friends of Jimmy Bazley Fund has two main fundraising events each year, The Grain Industry Golf Day which since 2001 has raised in excess of $103,000 and the Pacific Seeds Bake-Off.
The bake-off, hosted by Toowoomba company Pacific Seeds invites staff members to enter a dish in the bake-off which is then judged. Staff pay a fee to submit a dish and also to taste others.
The Friends of Jimmy Bazley Fund was also fortunate to be supported by Jimmy Maher through his tribute lunch in August 2008. Jimmy Maher and Jim Bazley became close friends after they met while Jimmy was visiting patients at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Jimmy Maher is still close friends with the Bazley’s and auctioned off prizes at his tribute lunch in August 2008 to raise money in honour of Jim.
