What We Do

Big Hearts at Big W

Zoe is 9 years old. While she looks like a normal healthy kid on the outside, her body fights a constant battle. She lives with cystic fibrosis - one of the most common life-threatening genetic conditions afZoe.jpgfecting Australian children. It primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, and it’s a lifelong condition. There is no cure yet.

She goes through intensive daily chest physiotherapy and nebulised drugs to stop the build-up of fluid in her lungs. She also takes antibiotics to prevent infections.

“I’m used to physio and nebulisers. I don’t really like being in hospital but they do some fun things and I have to stay in hospital to get better. It’s the best place to be,” Zoe said.

Zoe’s big heart made her the perfect choice to be the ambassador for the Big W Big Heart Appeal. The support of Big W in Queensland means researchers at the Royal Children’s Hospital can continue making advancements that will extend the lives of children living with cystic fibrosis.

“I’m happy to help and get the message out,” Zoe said.

Big W has supported the Respiratory Research Program since 2003, and has raised more than $1.8 million to help sick kids like Zoe. You can show your support by visiting your local Big W store and making a purchase from our range of Big Heart merchandise including teddy bears ($5), heart keyrings ($5) and flashing pens ($4).

The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation has committed to investing $2.7 million over five years to fund the Respiratory Research Program. Thank you Big W for helping us make this happen.
