What We Do

National Volunteer Week

It’s National Volunteer Week from 9-15 May 2011, and the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation is saying a big THANK YOU to all of its extraordinary volunteers.

During the year between National Volunteer Week 2010 and April 2011, Foundation volunteers helped to work wonders for sick kids by:
-    running the Book Bunker, which loaned out 5,522 books and made 607 ward visits;
-    cuddling 710 babies through the Cuddle Carers program
-    assisting 29,257 families through the Information Desk service;
-    supporting 4,449 families while their children were in theatre;
-    giving massages to 315 carers;
-    interacting with kids and their families during 12,255 visits to the Wonder Factory; and
-    much, much more!

In total, volunteers gave 37,176 hours of their time to assist families 60,552 times at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

The Hospital is holding a morning tea on Wednesday 11 May to show its appreciation for all of these generous volunteers.

National Volunteer Week is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you to the more than 5 million Australian who volunteer each year.

2011 also marks the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers. The United Nations called for this anniversary to be marked across the planet, so 2011 is IYV+10.

Australian volunteers contribute more than 700 million hours of community service to so many areas of society, including community health care, heritage and arts, environment conservation, emergency services, education, social justice and sports.
