In the lead up to Christmas, most eight year olds are focused on the presents they want from Santa.
Abbey Coman, however, is one eight year old who wants less for herself and more for others less fortunate than her.
Recently presenting the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $5188.30, the young student from Our Lady of Dolours primary school was inspired to raise money for the Foundation after many trips to the Royal Children’s Hospital to visit her friend, Tom, who was being treated for cancer.
As part of her fundraising efforts, Abbey walked 15km on Father’s Day with lots of support from family and friends.
Abbey said she wanted to raise the money for the unique Wonder Factory, which is run by the Foundation.
“Sick kids visit the Wonder Factory to have some fun – it makes them feel happier,” she said.
Proud mum, Jacinta Coman, said Abbey had come up with fundraising idea herself.
“I have been blown away by the support Abbey has received,” Mrs Coman said. Abbey was recently awarded the Community YoungStar award for her support and commitment to fundraising for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation.
