In August 2010, our Bravery Beads television commercial starring little patient, Maddie, was aired with a great response from viewers.

At just 19 months old little Maddie was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Within hours of learning the devastating news, Maddie’s parents Susan and Oliver were rushing their little girl into emergency surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Susan will never forget the wrenching moment she and her husband handed over their precious child to the paediatric neurosurgeon. “We didn’t know whether we would see her again,” she recalls with emotion.

Thanks to the skilled surgical team, Maddie recovered fully – although a little of the tumour could not be removed. While it isn’t malignant, Maddie has regular scans at the Royal Children’s Hospital to ensure the residual tumour isn’t growing.

Today, Maddie is a happy, healthy seven year old who was thrilled to star in our Bravery Beads TV commercial.

For kids with cancer, the ‘Bead Journey’ can be traumatic, but, with your continued support for paediatric research, there will be fewer beads and more effective treatments on a child’s cancer journey and other childhood illnesses.
