Meet Grace

GraceGrace is back to her happy self.

Grace had always been a happy, energetic baby. Then her energy levels dropped and she began getting sick. She went to the doctor three times in one week, and each time her parents grew more and more worried. They were particularly concerned when her breathing became rapid.

Grace was sent for some tests which showed she didn't have a virus, and then she was rushed to hospital for a glucose test.

Grace's mum and dad, Belinda and Ashley, could tell that whatever she had was very serious, but the doctors remained calm and reassuring.

Eventually, the tests showed that Grace had diabetes, and she was immediately given insulin.

Grace spent two days in the Royal Children's Hospital intensive care unit (ICU), and one week in a general ward of the hospital.

Belinda and Ashley had no family history of diabetes, so knew nothing about this condition at the time. But the diabetes educators at the Royal Children's Hospital taught them everything they needed to know. They now feel confident about treating their daughter's diabetes.

Belinda said she was also very grateful for the Wonder Factory volunteers who came and played with Grace while they were doing their training. Having the volunteers there meant they could focus on learning about their child's illness.

Grace is now back to her happy, energetic self, while Ashley and Belinda are grateful for the wonderful support and expert care they received at the Royal Children's Hospital.
