While life may seem to stand still when you have a sick child in hospital, in reality it continues on quietly in the background. Bills still need to be paid and friends and family still want to stay in touch.

To help balance the needs of a sick child with the demands of daily living a little easier, the Children's Health Foundation provides a family care program which includes:

Main Parent Lounge – Level 1, Coles Building (entry is outside the hospital)

This room is for parents and carers of patients and provides access to fax, internet, tea and coffee, daily newspapers and magazines – all free of charge.

  • Open weekdays 9.00am-7.30pm
  • Open weekends 10.00am-5.00pm

(hours may change on public holidays)

Ward Parent Lounges

Free internet access for parents and carers of patients is available in Banksia, Robertson, McConnel and PICU, and in the Surf playroom. See the nurses or the ward receptionist for your 10 minute token.

Massage

Qualified massage theraptists volunteer their time regularly to provide free neck and shoulder massages for parents and carers of patients. Speak with nurses or your ward receptionist to register your interest.

Volunteer Recruitment

Parents in Theatre

Our volunteers assist parents and carers in the operating theatre. Volunteers help gown the parents so they can both enter the operating room together and provide support before and after anaesthetic procedure.
This helps settle the child.

Volunteers dress in theatre attire, help gown the parent and explain the theatre process before both enter the operating theatre. Parents, carers and staff are always grateful for the support our volunteers offer them, before and after the anaesthetic procedure. This allows medical staff to focus on the child while the volunteer offers a helping hand to the parent.

It is a wonderfully supportive role that clearly displays the difference our volunteers make to people’s lives

These are just simple ways of helping parents take care of those little worries, so they can concentrate on their really important mission - to help their children get well.
