Sunshine Coast
Funds raised on the Sunshine Coast last year was used to buy resuscitation training equipment for the special care nursery at the Nambour Hospital. This vital equipment will be used across the whole of the Sunshine Coast area for training nursing, midwifery and medical staff in how to resuscitate newborns. Every year 2241 babies are born in the area, and there are almost 500 admissions to the special care nursery alone.
Funds raised from this year’s Appeal will be spent on Ear Nose and Throat Equipment for the Nambour Hospital. Currently the Sunshine Coast has a minimal ENT service. Currently children who need treatment need to travel to Brisbane.
Cairns
Funds raised in Cairns last year funded the purchase of distraction therapy equipment for a new 8 bed specialised paediatric procedure room in the Emergency Department of the Cairns Base Hospital. A visit to the Emergency Department of any hospital can be very traumatic for children who can be in intense pain or be undergoing unfamiliar treatments in an unknown environment. The distraction equipment uses bright colours, sounds and images to distract the children – projecting calming or funny pictures on the ceiling, and a colourful bubble column. Experience in other hospitals shows this type of therapy can decrease anxiety, fear and pain in both child patients and their parents who often find the treatment as traumatic as their children, and can reduce treatment time. Funds raised payed for a bubble tube, solar effect wheel and wheel package, mirror ball, LCD television and DVD and installation.
Funds raised from this year’s Appeal will enable Cairns Hospital to purchase a vital signs monitor and two sleep apnoea monitors which will allow staff to safely and accurately undertake monitoring and vital signs recording of children who are extremely unwell.
Mackay
Funds raised in the Mackay area last year helped fund the purchase of paediatric equipment designed to give medical professionals specific training in emergency care, patient handling and transportation of sick and injured kids.
Funds raised from this year’s Appeal will enable Mackay Hospital to purchase a wall mounted monitor to effectively monitor high care patients in CAU as well as purchase a portable suction unit to use for chronic illness for in-home use.
Central Queensland
Funds raised in Central Queensland last year was used to buy an infant radiant warmer to provide quality care for neonatal infants in the Special Care Nursery at Rockhampton Hospital, as well as training equipment for local nursing staff to ensure the highest levels of paediatric care.
Funds raised from this year’s Appeal across Central Queensland (Bundaberg, Rockhampton and Gladstone) this year will be used to purchase much needed equipment for the children’s ward at the Rockhampton Hospital.
Townsville
Money raised in Townsville last year was used to purchase a Microlux DLK Camera System for paediatric surgery. The camera system is used when operating on tiny patients and improves the ability to perform precise small fields surgery. It helps minimise the after-effects of invasive surgery and improve young patient’s chances of a full and speedy recovery. The camera can also help to train junior doctors or eliminate the need for displacing key personnel as images can be beamed on to a screen via conference call.
Funds raised from this year’s Appeal will go towards the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) which provides vital services for the care and medical attention to pre-term infants across North Queensland. Funds will be used to purchase Bilisoft Blankets which offer an LED phototherapy system to newborns in NICU. The hospital currently caters for over 250 admissions to NICU each year.
