Get Involved

Weekly update, 13 September 2010

Welcome to this week's edition of  Watch This Space.  Last week we had a heap of fun with all of our visitors - Coen and Donate Life, Kemp Place Fire Station and Craig Smith.  This week we look forward to more fun with Australia Zoo visiting on Friday.

A HUGE welcome to Nicky Pearson!

Please join Heather Rapkins and the Hospital Services team in welcoming Nicole Pearson to the Foundation!

Nicky joins us in the role of  Volunteer Admin & Training Coordinator replacing Kate Trennery (who we're happy to report is loving life up in Yeppoon).

Murray CODD - Coen's Organ Donor Drive

On Wednesday we had Coen and Donate Life visit the hospital to promote Coen's Organ Donor Drive.

In December 2010 Coen is going to jet ski the 2000km length of the Murray River. A feat for anyone let alone someone with Cystic Fibrosis and Diabetes. Along the way he will stop at towns to promote and sign people onto the Organ Donor Register.

If you would like to be on the Organ Donor Register and help Coen reach his goal of signing up 1000 people there are registration forms available through the Wonder Factory and Foundation.

Big Red Truck

What's better then the Big Red Car?  The Big Red Truck!

On Wednesday we had some of the wonderful Crew from Kemp Place fire station visit the Wonder Factory and the wards.  With them was Blazer the Bear and of course they arrived in style in one of the departments trucks.

The visit ended with an opportunity to climb into the truck and have a look around and for one lucky boy also the rare chance to activate the sirens and lights!

Blazer and the Crew were a huge hit with the kids and they even managed to find time for an interview on Wonder Factory TV.  We hope to see them all here for another (social!) visit soon.

Wonkey Donkey visits the Wonder Factory

On Sunday the very talented and renowned NZ singer/song writer Craig Smith visited the Wonder Factory as part of the Get Kids Reading initiative run by Scholastic.  Craig performed many of his award winning children's songs including the Wonkey Donkey which has been made into a children's book.

A big thank you to Craig and Scholastic for running this wonderful event.  Everyone young and old thoroughly enjoyed Craig's performance.

Useless Tip of the Week

The very first bomb dropped by the Allies on Berlin during World War II killed the only elephant in the Berlin Zoo.
