RCH Memo on Flood Crisis

RCH Foundation staff and volunteers should be aware that Brisbane City Council have advised that Victoria Park Herston would be one of the temporary collection points utilised by the Council for flood impacted household items. This means there will be a high level of truck and traffic movement into and around the park as a result. The Council has established traffic control on the temporary refuse site, and RCH is in close contact with the Council, who are mindful of the need to keep emergency access points to and from the hospital clear at all times.

It is anticipated the temporary facility will have local impacts that we need to be prepared for, and tolerant of, given the extenuating circumstances Council and the local community are currently dealing with. These are likely to include an unpleasant odour and increased traffic along routes to and from the site initially.

The RCH has asked us to remind all volunteers how important it is to ensure hygiene and safety precautions are followed when helping with the flood cleanup. Regular hand washing is essential to prevent the spread of infection. Appropriate clothing, including covered footwear, long pants and sleeves are also essential for those helping with clean up efforts. Sunscreen and hats are a must, even on cloudy days. Keeping fluids up will help with fatigue management. Please take a leadership stand in this regard and advise family, friends and colleagues of these important measures when opportunities arise.

Correct Contact Information

One of the things that was highlighted during the flood crisis was the number of incorrect phone numbers and email address on file for our volunteers.

As a matter of importance and urgency can you please check with your supervisor the details we have on file for you.  We need to have your correct details, we must be able to contact you and your next of kin in case of shift changes, closures and emergencies.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this very important matter.

Comings and Goings

Welcome Amelia, Kathryn and Teri.

Volunteer Tip of the Week

When storing the controllers for the gaming consoles ensure that the first wrap of the cord is not tight as this can result in the cord becoming damaged and the controller will need to be replaced.  Hold the first few inches of the lead straight and then wrap the rest of the cord around the controller.  Of course, the controller will have been wiped with an alcohol wipe before being put away!  Please ask your Supervisor to demonstrate.
